REFLECTIONS ON DICHOTOMY

Dichotomy is deeply rooted in us. Black – white, man – woman, old – young, right – left …. As long as we are aware that the space between the poles is not empty, but filled with many intermediate steps, this is not a problem. However, there is an increasing polarization and division in society on many important issues: corona deniers – Corona measures supporters, anti-abortion – pro-abortion, Putin – Ukraine and the West, climate deniers – Last Generation. There is an increasing tendency to be quick to judge. There is less doubt and thoughtfulness. As a result, the complex reality is more and more faded out.

Flags are fetishes that carry meaning and contribute significantly to the creation of group identity. A flag has only two sides, so it is an ideal symbol for dichotomy. Once the flag is raised, it is influenced by nature. The black and white is dissolved by the wind and the light of the sun. The flag can partially turn over and thus show both sides at the same time. The sunlight makes the black appear partly silvery grey while the white looks grey in the shade.
