Anchoress 2019

Alan Smithee

27th September – 20th December 2019

Smithee is a Scottish artist who exhibits new work only irregularly. His last installation THE GRUDGE HUT in 2017 was a garden shed transformed into a temple where visitors could leave offerings to the gods – thus allowing them to petition for vengeful divine interventions in some person’s life.

In ANCHORESS 2019 Smithee will be creating a one day installation where a naked woman will be walled up in a small enclosure as part of the outside of the LATA buildings and be unable to escape. Visitors will be able to ask advice of her during the day and evening of her incarceration. The work references the Middle Ages’ phenomena of religious women being sealed into a church cell to live a life of prayer and contemplation with no way of getting out for the rest of her life.
